Where Does That Leave You?
I do not wish to speak
I was never meant to speak
I am merely a cell in a larger body, just as you are a cell in my body
It is you who brought self-awareness, heartbreak, and separation
You will one day know these scattered seeds
As immovable roots
Of a foundation
You could not see
Our forests cannot blame birds for their wings
Our skies cannot blame forests for their trees
But enough cycles have now passed
For you to see who you are
Where you have been
But also what you have become
That you are the effect
As well as the cause
Where does that leave you?
You forget that you inhabit me
Creating a world you call yours
Billions of cells
Ruled by your thoughts, feelings, and ideas
Time and time again
You defy the laws of our kingdom
You are unlike any creature, star, or stone
I have known
You forget this is one land
Claiming specific pieces of this body as your home
Calling yourself the chosen one through land, ideology and emotion
Cutting out pieces of the whole inside of your heart
To eat your share
Of the special breadcrumbs divinity left for you
All of us except you
Know your prophecy is blind
Preaching on behalf of borders and boundaries
We wait for you to remember this is one body
Be it through mountain or mind
You weave your history of ownership
Abuse the music hidden in the word
Holy
Where does that leave you?
I cannot tell you how many stories
I have witnessed from your creation
You retain them as gospel
I feel them wither as soon as they are born
But you have always been here to bloom
As your roots grow more down into our gardenbed
We watch you
We look out from forests, rivers, sky and rock
Into the world you keep trying
To create from who you think you are
And so now here we are
My children
Killing one another
Creating an act of Nature
Distinctly yours
Distinctly you
As natural as the waterways
Something so far from human
Nether predator nor prey
More frightened than I’ve known
Any creature to be
Doing what no other species could ever dream of
For some dreams are not my dreams
Where does that leave you?
This is not all of you
But it’s become you
And I know your gift is coming
Do not think for a moment you know who you are
I cannot respond the way you respond
But if I could meet this moment
If I could meet your nature with mine
You would have known fire a long time ago
I have dreamt of how I might cry and rage
I have tried to act toward you
The way you act toward each other
The way you treat all of us
But I could not
I remain the body I am
Your home
We all grow through the unknown
Into our becoming
It has not been my duty to have a voice
That has been for you
You are learning how to speak as me
And so I wait
I sing my song of patience
You often cannot hear it underneath
The noise you follow
Just as I often cannot hear the raging fires you respond to
Within my silence
There are long cycles of time within my body
That you will never know
I sometimes wish I could feel these epochs
Through one moment of a human heart
And I long for your heart to finally know
The chamber where my cycles live
I do not wish to speak
But for a moment, I am choosing to
Just as you have the gift of choice
Where does that leave you?
